چکیده

Populations of whiteflies [Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) sl.] and the rates at which they were parasitized in cotton fields in Israel and California were monitored over a number of years. Studies took place both in fields that were treated with insecticides and in untreated fields and permitted us to assess the influence of insecticidal treatments upon percentage parasitism. The results showed that, in many cases, insecticide treatments had only a minor effect on levels of parasitism and that high levels of parasitism were sustained in insecticide-treated fields. However, many repeated treatments, especially if monocrotophos was used, resulted in significant reductions in levels of parasitism in Israel. Our findings suggest that the species of parasitoids we observed may be no more severely impacted by certain insecticides than nymphal whiteflies that serve as hosts. Nonetheless, reductions in parasitoid abundance may have important consequences for the biological control of B. tabaci over time and over larger areas, and judicious use of insecticides in commercial cotton fields is warranted. r 1998

Field evaluation of different insecticide use strategies as resistance management and control tactics for Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae).

Various insecticide use strategies including rotations, sequential use, and mixtures were evaluated experimentally on Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) in California and Arizona (U.S.A.) cotton fields. Toxicological responses of adult B. tabaci were measured along with preimaginal densities and cotton yields from plots subjected to different insecticide regimens. Weekly monitoring for susceptibility c...

Taxonomic Position of Iranian Isolates of Eretmocerus mundus (Merect), a Parasitoid of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius)

Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), is one of the most important pest of vegetable and fruit crops. This polyphagous pest has a range of natural enemies including the parasitoid Eretmocerus mundus (Merect) (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae). To determine the molecular profile and taxonomic status of Iranian isolates of E. mundus, parasitized B. tabaci samples were collected from cotton...

TRANSGENIC PLANTS AND INSECTS Long-Term Assessment of the Effects of Transgenic Bt Cotton on the Function of the Natural Enemy Community

Field studies to assess effects of transgenic crops onnontarget organisms primarily have focused on nontarget abundance and diversity, whereas few have examined effects on nontarget community function. A 5-yr Þeld study in Arizona assessed whether transgenic cotton producing the Cry1Ac toxin of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) had an effect on the natural enemy communityÕs impact on three key pests....

Improved Conservation of Natural Enemies with Selective Management Systems for Bemisia tabaci (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae) in Cotton*

A large-scale study was conducted in 1996 to evaluate and demonstrate strategies for pest management of Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) in cotton involving different insecticide regimes, application methods, and action thresholds. Here we examined the effects of the various management systems on the abundance and activity of native natural enemies. Population densities of 18 out of 20 taxa of arthro...
